South Harrow Area Guide

I’ve spent some time in the South Harrow Area and below I give you all a run down of what it is like. I’ll touch on crime, transport links and much more.

South Harrow Area Guide – Introduction

Just down the road from Harrow On The Hill, South Harrow is a dynamic and culturally diverse suburb.

Residents say it offers a unique blend of urban convenience and community charm.

Going back a long time it was previously known as a farming district.

It has clearly evolved from its agricultural roots into a bustling residential area, boasting a variety of local amenities and decent transport links.

These are what makes it a desirable location for a lot of families, professionals, and students alike.

But one person’s desirable is another’s undesirable so let’s dig in from an independent standpoint.

South Harrow which is located in the obviously named London Borough of Harrow, boasts a range of transport links.

What I would say however is that they are quite limited when compared to suburbs elsewhere in London.

Here are the key features;

Underground

South Harrow is primarily served by the South Harrow tube station, which lies on the Uxbridge branch of the London Underground’s Piccadilly Line.

This provides direct services to central London and other key destinations, making it a vital link for commuters.

The journey to central London typically takes around 30-40 minutes and it is in Zone 5.

With the station being isolated to one line on the underground and no national rail you are dependent on the Piccadilly Line working well.

Also of note is that due to it being in zone 5, your fares will be slightly higher than from other destinations.

Bus services

The area is served by numerous bus routes that connect South Harrow to surrounding areas and key destinations within London.

These buses provide convenient access to places like Harrow town center, Heathrow Airport, and other neighbouring suburbs.

The bus network is extensive and reliable, offering both regular and night bus services.

Key bus routes include the 140, which offers 24-hour service between Harrow Weald and Heathrow Airport.

Also the H9 and H10, which operate in loops from Harrow Bus Station covering South Harrow, Rayners Lane, and surrounding areas.

For those who prefer to travel by car, South Harrow is well connected by road.

It’s close to major roads like the A312, which provides easy access to the M4 and M25 motorways, connecting residents to the wider London area and beyond.

This makes it convenient for car travel, both for commuting and leisure purposes.

Crime – Is South Harrow Safe?

The crime rate in South Harrow is 94.2 crimes per 1,000 residents. That is marginally lower than the London average and nearby Harrow On The Hill.

This statistic is taken from the Metropolitan Police and census data.

Here is a chart for the crime in the past year in South Harrow. Whilst the overall average is below the rest of London, it does seem like there is a worrying rise in offending.

This may be a blip but it is something for residents and potential visitors to be aware of.

In terms of the type of offences in the area the top reported crimes are violence and antisocial behaviour. This is pretty consistent across residential areas across London.

Some of the shops are tired looking

From spending time in the area I must say that I never felt unsafe and didn’t really see any signs of crime outside the odd bit of graffiti.

South Harrow Area Guide – Demographics

South Harrow, like much of wider Harrow, is known for its ethnic diversity. The area has a significant South Asian community, with substantial populations of Indian, Pakistani, and Sri Lankan descent.

There are also communities from other ethnic backgrounds, including White British, African, and Eastern European.

In terms of statistics, Asian ethnicity is the largest share of the local population.

Harrow On The Hill demographics

The most common religion in the area is Christianity, this is followed by Hindu and Muslim.

South Harrow Area Guide – House Prices

When a lot of people consider Harrow they immediately think of the prestigious school sharing the same name.

With that built in prestige you would naturally assume there is a price to pay.

This is not necessarily the case however. According to Rightmove the average price of a property in South Harrow is £489,000.

Not cheap by any stretch but at the same time around £50k less than the London average.

As a further point semi-detached properties are fetching £589,970. Again that’s pretty reasonable for a family home with tube connections.

Is South Harrow A Nice Place To Live

Walking around South Harrow I found it to be a place of contrast.

Some streets are very appealing on the eye and on others you have some signs of poverty.

This was demonstrated by a Waitrose being directly opposite a tired looking block of flats.

South Harrow has a variance of properties.

That’s nothing to say living in any of those flats should be anything to be ashamed of.

I’m just highlighting the fact that South Harrow is a mixing pot of different people and wallet sizes.

South Harrow high street is ok but nothing special

If you are looking for somewhere with a tube station, affordable properties and low crime I would recommend you put South Harrow on your shortlist.
